Local Government Insurance TrustThe Local Government Insurance Trust (LGIT) is a joint association of Maryland local governments including the Maryland Association of Counties and the Maryland Municipal League providing an alternative to the diminishing availability of insurance coverages to municipal governments and the increasing premium costs in the municipal insurance market. LGIT is owned and directed by the local governments that subscribe to its coverages. It operates under the terms of a trust Agreement. LGIT's programs and finances are closely supervised by representatives of its participating counties and municipalities through a committee structure that provides expertise to the organization and a training ground for prospective trustees. The Board of Trustees is empowered to establish pools to provide coverage for any class of casualty related or property related risks as well as a health benefits pool and a self-insurance liability funding pool. Benefits include: the broadest liability protection practical; stability in premiums and continuity in coverage; a long-term commitment to provide a lower cost alternative to commercial insurance; member loss reviews; hazard evaluation surveys; video and reference library; seminars and educational services; employer hot line; quarterly newsletter; and member recognition awards.
